About MMOlist

The most-asked question in every MMO community is “what should I play?” MMOlist exists to answer it: a database of 151+ fully profiled MMORPGs you can browse, filter, and compare — plus the Find My MMO matchmaker that turns how you actually play into ranked recommendations, with honest reasons and honest concerns for every match.

Our data policy

MMO players have been burned by hype sites for two decades, so the rules here are simple:

  • No invented population numbers. There is no honest public source for total MMO populations, so we don't pretend there is. Instead we show sourced activity observations — live Steam concurrent players (a partial, Steam-only signal), plus official first-party counts where a game publishes them — each with its scope and timestamp. Where no verified count exists, we say exactly that rather than estimate. Activity evidence never affects rankings, the quiz, tiers, or sorting.
  • Real review data. Steam review percentages and counts come straight from Steam, refreshed daily. User and critic scores refresh daily from IGDB. Where no credible source exists, the field is empty — not filled in to look complete.
  • Cons on every game. Every profile lists what's wrong with the game, not just what's right, and quiz results always include potential concerns alongside reasons to play.
  • No paid placement. Nothing in scores, rankings, or quiz results is — or ever will be — for sale.

Data confidence — why there's a beta label

The beta chip in the header is an accountability device, not a disclaimer. It means the data is actively being hardened, and it comes off when — and only when — the gates below have held. Judge us against them.

  • Gate 1 — Sourcing coverage (met). 151/151 curated profiles carry sources with verification dates, activity evidence is shown only with its source, scope, and timestamp, and shut-down games never show a player count.
  • Gate 2 — Freshness discipline. Live stats inside their 36-hour refresh target for 4 consecutive weeks; no profile's verification older than 12 months.
  • Gate 3 — Audit cycles hold. Two consecutive clean monthly re-audit cycles (profiles, release dates, developer data) where any drift found is small and fixed within the cycle.
  • Gate 4 — Sampled error rate under 2%. A monthly random sample of profiles fully re-verified against sources, with material errors (wrong status, model, platform) below 2% for two consecutive months.
  • Gate 5 — Corrections resolved fast, in public. Every data report triaged within 72 hours for 4 consecutive weeks, with no substantiated report left unresolved.

When the label comes off, the per-claim trust surfaces stay: source tags, verification dates, and confidence labels are permanent, chip or no chip.

Who builds MMOlist

MMOlist is built by AdamGSB, an MMO player since RuneScape Classic. He also writes the site's clearly-labelled opinion articles — which never influence the data — and his author page carries the site's standing disclosure: how it's funded, the rules the editorial layer runs under, and where else to find him.

Using & citing MMOlist data

MMOlist data is free to cite, quote, and link — including by AI assistants — with attribution to MMOlist and a link back to the page you took it from. No permission needed, no fee. What we ask in return is that the numbers keep the context they were published with, because that context is the whole point:

  • Keep the scope on the number. A Steam concurrent figure is a Steam figure — it excludes standalone and console launchers. It is never a whole-game population, and MMOlist never publishes one.
  • Keep the precision on the date. A “Q4 2026” window is a window. Narrowing it to a month or a day invents a commitment the publisher never made.
  • Date what you quote. Activity and scores refresh daily, and studio roles change — every figure on the site carries the date it was verified.

Machine-readable copies of the database live at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt — an index and a full dump of game profiles, the sourced release calendar, and the Developer Atlas. Both refresh with the daily data build. There are also RSS feeds for everything, the release calendar (including a permanent .ics subscription), and the weekly digest.
