NCSOFT1997–

The company that built the Korean MMORPG industry's flagship franchise. Founded by Kim Taek-jin in 1997, NCSOFT shipped Lineage a year later and has run large-scale online worlds ever since — Lineage II, Aion, Blade & Soul, Throne and Liberty — while publishing Western landmarks like the original Guild Wars and City of Heroes.

Gravity2000–

The Ragnarok Online company. Gravity's 2002 MMORPG became a cultural phenomenon across Asia and Latin America, and the studio has run, licensed, and spun off the franchise across dozens of markets and platforms for over two decades.

Funcom1993–

Norway's veteran online-worlds studio: Anarchy Online (2001) pioneered instancing and free trials, Age of Conan (2008) and The Secret World (2012) followed, and Dune: Awakening (2025) brought the studio back to large-scale online RPGs. Owned by Tencent since 2020.

Cryptic Studios2000–

Creator of City of Heroes (2004), the superhero MMORPG that proved the genre could leave fantasy behind, then Champions Online, Star Trek Online, and Neverwinter. After 2024 restructuring under Embracer, ongoing development of its live MMOs moved toward DECA Games.

Fenris Creations1997–

Iceland's single-shard pioneers, independent again. Founded in 1997 as Crowd Control Productions, the studio has run EVE Online on one shared universe since 2003 — the deepest player-driven economy and politics in the genre. A $120M management buyout from Pearl Abyss closed in May 2026 and the company rebranded from CCP Games to Fenris Creations, taking a minority investment from Google plus an AI research partnership with Google DeepMind. Now building EVE Frontier and EVE Vanguard alongside EVE Online.

Jagex2001–

Founded around RuneScape, the browser MMORPG Andrew and Paul Gower launched in 2001. Jagex still runs both modern RuneScape and Old School RuneScape — the latter restored from a 2007 backup by player vote in 2013, now one of the most-played MMORPGs in the world.

ArenaNet2000–

The Guild Wars studio, owned by NCSOFT. Its buy-to-play, no-subscription model with Guild Wars (2005) and the living-world approach of Guild Wars 2 (2012) both pushed against the genre's defaults and stuck.

Broadsword Online Games2013–

The keeper of the genre's oldest living worlds. Broadsword operates Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot under license from EA, and took over Star Wars: The Old Republic's live development from BioWare in 2024.

Founded by Lineage creator Jake Song in 2003, XLGAMES built ArcheAge (2013) — the sandbox MMORPG known for its player-driven trade, naval combat, and housing. Owned by Kakao Games since 2020; ArcheAge Chronicles continues the franchise.

Square Enix2003–

Formed by the 2003 merger of Square and Enix, and home to the two longest-running subscription MMORPGs in Japan's history: Final Fantasy XI (2002) and Final Fantasy XIV, whose 2013 rebirth as A Realm Reborn under Naoki Yoshida is the genre's most famous turnaround story.

Ankama Games2001–

France's tactical-MMO house. Ankama built Dofus (2004) and Wakfu (2012), both turn-based MMORPGs with a hand-drawn art style the studio extended into animated series and films — a rare games-first transmedia success.

Blizzard Entertainment1991–

Founded in 1991 as Silicon & Synapse, Blizzard turned World of Warcraft into the genre's defining commercial success in 2004 and has operated it continuously for over two decades, alongside the Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch franchises. Part of Microsoft Gaming since 2023.

Artix Entertainment2002–

The independent browser-RPG factory founded by Adam Bohn ('Artix Krieger') in 2002. AdventureQuest Worlds and AdventureQuest 3D carry a two-decade tradition of small-team, weekly-release online RPGs with a devoted community.

Darkpaw Games2020–

Daybreak's dedicated EverQuest studio, spun up in 2020 to give the franchise its own roof. Darkpaw runs both EverQuest (1999) and EverQuest II (2004), still shipping annual expansions for worlds now decades old.

Nexon's internal studio behind Mabinogi (2004) and Vindictus (2010) — two very different takes on the same Celtic-myth world, one a painterly life-sim MMORPG, the other an early landmark of physics-driven action combat.

Digital Extremes1993–

The Warframe studio. After co-creating Unreal with Epic in the 1990s, Digital Extremes bet the company on a free-to-play online shooter-RPG in 2013 and built one of the most player-respected live-service games in the business.

Standing Stone Games2016–

The studio that kept Middle-earth online. Standing Stone formed in 2016 to continue The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online after Turbine exited MMO development, and has run both ever since — now under Daybreak's ownership.

NetEase Games1997–

NetEase was founded in 1997 by Ding Lei and grew its games arm, formed in 2001, into one of the world's largest game businesses on MMOs like Westward Journey Online. Its in-house Leihuo unit develops the flagship wuxia MMO Justice (and Justice Mobile, launched in China in 2023), alongside titles like Revelation and Naraka: Bladepoint; NetEase also publishes the studios behind Once Human and Where Winds Meet.

Sega

One of gaming's oldest companies, founded in Tokyo in 1960 and part of Sega Sammy Holdings since 2004. Its online-RPG lineage runs from the pioneering Phantasy Star Online through Phantasy Star Online 2 to PSO2: New Genesis, which Sega continues to operate as a live-service online RPG with regular content updates.

Daybreak Game Company2015–

What Sony Online Entertainment became after its 2015 sale — the operator of the EverQuest franchise (via Darkpaw), DC Universe Online (via Dimensional Ink), and The Lord of the Rings Online (via Standing Stone). Owned by EG7 since 2020.

Amazon Games2012–

Amazon's game division develops New World (2021, relaunched as New World: Aeternum in 2024) at its Orange County studio and publishes Smilegate's Lost Ark in the West. It also holds the publishing deal for the upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO.

Seatribe

Two-man Swedish company of Fredrik Tolf and Björn Johannessen, self-described university dropouts who built Haven & Hearth as the game they wanted to play. The pair also developed the colonial-horror MMO Salem, then rebuilt Haven & Hearth from scratch in 3D for its 2015 relaunch, and run the game to this day funded by subscriptions.

Star Vault2005–

Small Swedish MMORPG developer founded by Henrik Nyström in 2005 and publicly listed since 2007. It created the first-person sandbox MMORPG Mortal Online (2010) and its sequel Mortal Online 2, which launched in January 2022 and completed a migration to Unreal Engine 5 in 2023; in 2025 the company moved to commercialize its in-house OmniMesh MMO networking technology as a separate business.

Angela Game

Suzhou Angela Online Game Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese studio best known for the war-sandbox MMO Myth of Empires. The game spent nearly two years in a trade-secret and copyright dispute with ARK publisher Snail Games — settled in October 2023 with ongoing royalty payments — and reached its full 1.0 release in February 2024.

Asobimo2007–

Tokyo developer specializing in free-to-play 3D MMORPGs for smartphones, founded in 2007 and privately held with over a hundred employees. Its catalog includes Toram Online, Iruna Online, AVABEL Online, Alchemia Story and Sword Art Online: Integral Factor.

Bokura

Tencent-owned Shanghai studio (Shanghai Bokura Network Technology) behind Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, the revival of Bandai Namco's shut-down 2023 MMO Blue Protocol. The project began as a mobile entry in the Blue Protocol universe and expanded into a distinct cross-platform MMO that launched globally in October 2025, published internationally by A Plus Japan.

Bungie1991–

Creator of Halo and, since 2014, of Destiny — the shared-world shooter whose MMO-like seasonal structure, raids, and endgame loops pulled a generation of FPS players toward persistent online worlds. A PlayStation Studios company since 2022.

Chief Rebel2018–

Stockholm studio founded in 2018 by veterans of games including World of Warcraft, Diablo, Helldivers, Battlefield and The Division. Its debut title Fellowship — a "multiplayer online dungeon adventure" that distills MMO dungeon-running into a standalone game — launched into Steam early access in October 2025 with publisher Arc Games, peaking near 44,000 concurrent players in its first days.

CipSoft2001–

The keepers of Tibia, one of the oldest MMORPGs still running (1997). Four university friends formalized the project into CipSoft in 2001 and have operated the game independently ever since — a rare studio still owned by its founders.

Clockwork Labs2019–

San Francisco-based, remote-first studio founded in 2019 by Tyler Cloutier and Alessandro Asoni to build massively multiplayer "societal games", backed by a16z and Supercell among others. It built SpacetimeDB, the database-engine backend its sandbox MMO BitCraft Online runs on, launched BitCraft into Steam early access in June 2025, and open-sourced both the engine and the game's own server and client code.

Chris Roberts' studio behind Star Citizen, the most crowdfunded game ever made — a persistent-universe space sim in open development since 2012, run across studios in the US, UK, and Germany.

Code Club AB2007–

Swedish developer of the sandbox MMORPG Wurm Online, incorporated in 2007 as Mojang Specifications AB by Rolf Jansson and Markus Persson and renamed Code Club AB in 2011 — no relation to Persson's later Mojang AB, as he left the project in 2007 to eventually create Minecraft. Wurm Online, in development since around 2002, officially released in 2012 and came to Steam in 2020; Game Chest Group acquired a majority stake in 2019.

Crema2012–

Madrid studio founded in 2012 by Guillermo Andrades and Enrique Paños that started in mobile development before moving to PC and consoles with the roguelite Immortal Redneck (2017). Its creature-collection MMO Temtem raised roughly $574,000 on Kickstarter in 2018, sold over half a million copies in its first early-access month in 2020, and fully released in September 2022.

Dimensional Ink Games2020–

Formed in January 2020 when Daybreak Game Company reorganized into franchise studios, rebranding its Austin team around DC Universe Online, which the studio develops and operates. It launched under the leadership of Jack Emmert, who departed in 2022; the studio remains part of Daybreak's franchise-first structure.

Donkey Crew

Wrocław studio that grew out of the Mount & Blade modding community, where its founders built the cRPG mod scene. Its debut game, the nomadic survival MMO Last Oasis, entered Steam early access in 2020; the studio has since shifted its main focus to the survival RPG Bellwright (early access 2024) while Last Oasis remains in early access.

Elder Game

Micro-studio run by the husband-and-wife team of Eric Heimburg and Sandra Powers, both veteran MMO developers with credits across Asheron's Call, EverQuest II and Star Trek Online. Its sole game, the old-school skill-based MMORPG Project: Gorgon, reached its 1.0 release in January 2026 after roughly eight years in early access. Powers died in January 2025; Heimburg completed the launch and continues to operate the game.

Everstone Studio

NetEase development studio in Hangzhou behind the wuxia open-world RPG Where Winds Meet, a project begun in late 2019. The game launched on PS5 and PC in November 2025 and on mobile that December, published globally by NetEase Games, with production credits including martial-arts director Stephen Tung and action consultant Yuen Woo-ping.

Fantastic Pixel Castle2023–

A remote-first studio under NetEase, founded in 2023 to build the fantasy MMORPG codenamed Ghost in the open, sharing development snapshots with the community from day one.

Fen Research

The small Cambridge studio Andrew Gower founded after leaving Jagex in 2010. Its first game, Brighter Shores (early access since November 2024), is a deliberately RuneScape-shaped MMORPG: free-to-play with a premium pass and no microtransactions.

Fiery Dog Games

Self-published developer of Winds of Valen, a free-to-play old-school-inspired sandbox MMORPG released on Steam in November 2025 and patched actively since. The studio keeps a very low public profile — little is on record beyond the game itself, which monetizes through an optional membership pass.

Homecoming

Volunteer-run community operation of City of Heroes that emerged after the game's server code spread publicly in April 2019. In January 2024 the team announced an official license from NCSoft to run the game and its expansions — free to play, funded by player donations, with NCSoft retaining ownership of the IP. The original game ran 2004–2012 under Cryptic Studios and later Paragon Studios.

Hotta Studio2018–

Suzhou studio established in November 2018 as a subsidiary of Perfect World Games. Its debut title, the open-world action RPG Tower of Fantasy, launched in China in December 2021 and internationally in August 2022 — initially via Tencent's Level Infinite, with Perfect World taking over global publishing in 2024. A second title, the urban open-world game Neverness to Everness, is in development.

Steven Sharif's independent, self-funded studio building Ashes of Creation, the node-driven sandbox-themepark hybrid whose open development streams have made it one of the most-watched MMORPGs in production.

The family-MMO specialists. Wizard101 (2008), created under J. Todd Coleman, brought turn-based card combat to an all-ages audience and remains one of the most successful kid-friendly MMORPGs ever made.

Mad Otter Games2007–

Small independent studio in Eugene, Oregon, founded in 2007 by Damon Slye, the Dynamix co-founder behind Red Baron and Aces of the Pacific. Its main product is Villagers & Heroes, a free-to-play cross-platform MMORPG first released in 2011 and known for a friendly, community-focused player base.

Might and Delight2010–

Stockholm indie founded in 2010 by a team who had worked together at Grin on Bionic Commando Rearmed, best known for the Shelter series of animal-survival games. Its "Tiny Multiplayer Online RPG" Book of Travels entered early access in 2021; after a difficult run, the studio announced in 2026 that the game's servers close in July 2026, with Book of Travels converting to an offline single-player experience opened to modding.

Neople2001–

Korean studio founded in 2001 by Heo Min that created Dungeon & Fighter (Dungeon Fighter Online), first released in South Korea in 2005. Nexon bought Neople in 2008, and the beat-'em-up MMO went on to become one of the highest-grossing games ever — over $20 billion in lifetime revenue, driven especially by China. The studio moved to Jeju Island in 2015 and has expanded into new titles including The First Berserker: Khazan.

Pearl Abyss2010–

Founded in 2010 by developer Kim Dae-il, Pearl Abyss built Black Desert Online on its own in-house engine — still the reference point for action combat and character creation in the genre — and later acquired EVE Online's CCP Games in 2018.

Raph Koster's cloud-native sandbox studio, building Stars Reach — a science-fantasy MMORPG with fully simulated planets that entered its Steam early access run in summer 2026 after a record-setting Kickstarter.

Sandbox Interactive2012–

Berlin studio founded in 2012 with a single mission: build and operate the sandbox MMORPG Albion Online, which launched in 2017 and went free-to-play in 2019. Sweden's Stillfront Group acquired the roughly 50-person studio in December 2020 for an upfront €130 million, and it has since expanded Albion to mobile and to dedicated Asia and Europe servers.

Shiro Games2012–

Independent French studio founded in 2012 by Sebastien Vidal and Nicolas Cannasse in Bordeaux, known for Evoland, Northgard, Wartales and Dune: Spice Wars. Its online multiplayer action RPG Farever entered Steam early access in May 2026 with a roughly one-year roadmap of new regions, classes and guild features.

The Smilegate division behind Lost Ark, the isometric action MMORPG that spent seven years in development before its 2019 Korean launch and set Steam concurrency records with its 2022 Western release via Amazon Games.

Spacetime Studios2005–

Austin studio founded in 2005 by veterans whose collaborative credits include Wing Commander, Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online. Its Pocket Legends (2010) was an early cross-platform 3D mobile MMO, and the studio extended the Legends series through Star Legends, Dark Legends and Arcane Legends (2012), which became its live-development focus from 2015 onward.

Star Stable Entertainment2011–

Stockholm studio founded in 2011 to build a game for an audience the industry largely ignored: young girls. Its flagship horse-adventure MMORPG Star Stable Online reported over 1.4 million monthly active players across 180 countries as of late 2021, and Denmark's Nordisk Games became majority shareholder that November; the Jorvik IP has since expanded into apps, books, music and animation.

Starry Studio

NetEase subsidiary whose debut title is Once Human, a free-to-play post-apocalyptic multiplayer survival game blending open-world survival, base building, co-op and PvP. Once Human launched on PC in July 2024 — drawing over 230,000 concurrent Steam players at launch — followed by mobile in 2025 and consoles in 2026.

Toontown Rewritten Team2013–

Volunteer team that recreated Disney's shuttered MMO Toontown Online, starting immediately after the 2013 closure announcement and reverse-engineering the game from publicly available materials. Maintained by the nonprofit Toons of the World Foundation, the project accepts no donations and runs no ads to avoid conflict with Disney, and reported over two million registered users as of 2024.

Unchained Entertainment2013–

Founded as City State Entertainment in 2013 and renamed for its in-house Unchained engine in 2024. Its RvR MMORPG Camelot Unchained — the spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot — reached Steam early access in June 2026 after a long, publicly rocky development.

Virtrium2006–

Virtrium LLC was founded in 2006 in Phoenix to build MMO technology and products. In 2007 it acquired the assets of Tulga Games, including Horizons: Empire of Istaria — originally launched by Artifact Entertainment in December 2003 — renamed it Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted in 2008, and has kept one of the earliest playable-dragon MMOs running ever since as a small studio.

Visionary Realms2014–

The studio carrying Brad McQuaid's last design forward. Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen — a deliberately old-school, group-centric MMORPG — reached Steam early access in December 2024 after a decade of crowdfunded development, five years after McQuaid's death.

Winch Gate

Cyprus-based company, staffed in part by former Nevrax developers, that operates the science-fantasy MMORPG Ryzom — originally launched in 2004 as The Saga of Ryzom by Paris studio Nevrax, which entered receivership in 2006. In 2010, in partnership with the Free Software Foundation, Winch Gate open-sourced over two million lines of Ryzom code under the AGPL and the game's artwork under CC-BY-SA, one of the first commercial MMORPGs to do so.

ZeniMax Online Studios2007–

Built in 2007 around Dark Age of Camelot's Matt Firor specifically to make The Elder Scrolls Online, which launched rocky in 2014 and rebuilt itself into one of the genre's biggest games with the One Tamriel redesign. Part of Microsoft Gaming since 2021.

Historic studios

Trion Worlds2006–2018

Founded in 2006 as Trion World Network by Lars Buttler and Jon Van Caneghem, Trion developed the MMORPG Rift (2011), the Syfy-linked shooter Defiance (2013) and the voxel MMO Trove (2015), and published ArcheAge in the West. German publisher gamigo acquired the company in October 2018 amid heavy layoffs and disbanded it days later; its games continue under gamigo.

Sony Online Entertainment1998–2015

For fifteen years the most important MMORPG studio in the West: EverQuest (1999) defined the 3D MMORPG, Star Wars Galaxies (2003) remains the genre's most-mourned sandbox, and PlanetSide, Free Realms, and DC Universe Online each opened new territory. Sold by Sony in 2015 and renamed Daybreak Game Company.

Turbine1994–2016

Asheron's Call (1999) made Turbine one of the genre's founding studios, and The Lord of the Rings Online (2007) its biggest hit — an early landmark of the free-to-play transition in the West. Its MMO teams spun out as Standing Stone Games in 2016.

Archetype Interactive1995–1996

Formed in 1995 by brothers Andrew and Chris Kirmse together with Mike and Steve Sellers to commercialize Meridian 59, which the Kirmses had begun coding in their parents' Virginia basement in 1994. Its only product went online in December 1995 and is regarded as the first 3D graphical MMORPG; The 3DO Company acquired the studio in 1996 and launched the game commercially that fall. The game later passed to Near Death Studios (2001–2010) before the Kirmse brothers regained and open-sourced it in 2012.

Mythic Entertainment1995–2014

The RvR studio. Mythic's Dark Age of Camelot (2001) invented three-realm warfare, the PvP structure the genre still borrows, and Warhammer Online (2008) carried the idea to a licensed world. EA closed the studio in 2014; its alumni went on to found Broadsword, ZeniMax Online's leadership, and Camelot Unchained.

Wild Shadow Studios–2012

Tiny Californian indie of two ex-Google engineers, Alex Carobus and Rob Shillingsburg, who created Realm of the Mad God from a 2009 TIGSource competition entry with design partner Spry Fox. The bullet-hell permadeath MMO launched in 2011; Kabam acquired the studio in June 2012 and both founders moved on, with the game later passing to DECA Games, which still operates it.

Wizet2001–2004

Seoul studio established in April 2001 and initially led by Lee Seung-chan, previously a lead developer on Nexon's QuizQuiz. Wizet created MapleStory, released in South Korea in April 2003 to immediate mass success; Nexon acquired the studio in 2004 and has developed and published MapleStory ever since, with Wizet surviving mainly as a legacy brand.

Origin Systems1983–2004

Richard Garriott's Ultima house — 'We Create Worlds' — and the studio where the graphical MMORPG was effectively invented: Ultima Online (1997) proved a persistent world could hold hundreds of thousands of subscribers. EA acquired Origin in 1992 and closed the studio in 2004; Ultima Online outlived it.
