The best buy-to-play mmorpgs in 2026

Buy-to-play is the quiet minority model in MMORPGs: pay for the box, play forever, no subscription. Players who want it usually want it for a reason — a game that already has your money has less incentive to squeeze you in-game — and the genre's best-kept secret is that some of its highest-rated games live here.

Guild Wars 2 is the model's standard-bearer (its whole design assumes you might leave and come back, no sub guilt attached), while newer entries like Dune: Awakening and survival-flavored hybrids test whether a one-time price can fund a live service. A caveat the data makes visible: buy-to-play doesn't guarantee clean monetization — a few entries here still run heavy cash shops, and the fact line under each says which.
