NCSoft's winged faction war — Elyos against Asmodian, fought in three dimensions over Legion-held floating fortresses, free to play and still updated seventeen years on.

Worth playing in 2026?

For a specific kind of player

Aion in 2026 scores 51/100 on the overall lens — updates keep coming, and reviews aggregate to 60/100. It's built around guilds — bring people or find them here. The monetization is the asterisk: pay-to-win perception sits at 5/5.

Worth it if

  • Large-scale siege and faction-war players
  • Guild PvP organisers
  • Anyone who wants flight as a combat dimension

Skip it if

  • pay-to-win is a dealbreaker for you (perception 5/5)
  • you want your time respected — grind is very high
  • you can only spare a few casual hours a week
  • you mostly play solo

What it costs to start

Free to start
  • · Free to download and play — no purchase required
  • · Free to download and play, with no box price and no mandatory subscription
  • · The Gold Pack is the de facto premium tier: 30 days of raised character slots (2 → 8), unrestricted chat and trade, and extra weekly instance entries
  • · Gear progresses through enchantment stones sold for cash with RNG failure — community reports put a fully enchanted piece in the €70–150 range
  • · Transformation contracts are gacha, and seasonal battle passes run alongside the shop
  • · Gold Packs can also be bought from other players with in-game kinah, so a patient free account can avoid spending
  • · Budget warning: heavy cash-shop pressure (P2W perception 5/5)

Pros & cons

  • Legion-owned floating fortresses fought over in three dimensions — an endgame nobody has copied
  • Free and complete: housing, six crafting professions and the whole 8.x content stack open to a free account
  • Art direction that has aged unusually well, with levelling far faster than it was in 2009
  • Enchantment RNG on cash-shop stones is the defining complaint — recent Steam sentiment sits at 44% positive
  • The Gold Pack gates instance entries and character slots, so free accounts play a smaller game
  • Thin Western population and a soloist-hostile endgame — sieges need a Legion
  • Official auto-hunt blurs playing and idling, which many veterans read as an admission about the grind

Best for

  • Large-scale siege and faction-war players
  • Guild PvP organisers
  • Anyone who wants flight as a combat dimension

Notes & links

The original 2008 service, distinct from both Aion Classic and Aion 2, and still live in all three of its regions. Operators differ: NCSoft runs Korea and North America directly (NA installs through the PURPLE launcher), while Gameforge has held the European licence since 2012. Development is genuinely ongoing but uneven — Korea shipped 'AION REMAKE' in May 2026, a full rework of all 13 classes plus a new auto-hunting server, and Gameforge shipped update 8.6 'Raksha's Revenge' in March 2026, but North America's 2026 headline content (the Dread Blade class) went to the Classic and Ascend servers rather than Live. Level cap is 85. Note that Aion has had official auto-hunt since update 7.6 — it auto-targets, runs a skill rotation and sells loot, and Korea's new Deva server is built around it; new players routinely mistake it for botting. No shutdown has been announced in any region. Deliberately not mapped in steam-apps.json: the only Steam build is Gameforge's EU client (appid 261430), it is region-locked away from the US storefront, and it averages a few dozen concurrent players because nearly everyone installs through Gameforge's own launcher or PURPLE — so a Steam figure here would describe almost none of the actual playerbase. Anyone weighing this game today should also know Aion 2 reaches global launch on October 5, 2026.
