Return guide

Returning to RuneScape?

Coming back is a different decision than starting fresh — you want to know what you missed, whether your progress survived, and if the game deserves your comeback. Pick roughly when you left; we'll fill in the rest.

When did you drop off?

What you missed since the old RuneScape

EoC to mobile (2012–2018)

  • · The game went mobile (2018) with full cross-play against desktop
  • · Elite and 120 skills stretched the endgame well past the caps you remember
  • · Logins moved to Jagex Accounts — the launcher migrates your old credentials

Archaeology era (2018–2023)

  • · Necromancy (2023) added a fourth combat style that levels from scratch — a deliberate fresh start returners share with everyone else
  • · Fresh Start Worlds (2022) experimented with clean-slate servers
  • · Monetization stayed the community's sore spot — expect the debate, and a game that mostly plays fine without engaging with it

2023–now

  • · You're nearly current — pick up Necromancy if you skipped it, and check the events calendar; modern RuneScape runs on seasonal events and double-XP windows

7 major changes across 3 eras since you left RuneScape.

Did your progress survive?

Your account is permanent — characters and banks persist across decades, and one membership covers both RuneScape and Old School. Pre-2013 logins may need migrating to a Jagex Account; the launcher walks you through it.

Catching up

  • Free-to-play is a real game — relearn the combat before you resubscribe
  • Legacy combat mode restores pre-EoC pacing while you find your feet
  • Necromancy is the sanctioned shortcut: a self-contained combat style balanced to level from zero

Your first week back

  1. Decide RuneScape vs Old School first — they diverged into genuinely different games, and your nostalgia may live in the other one
  2. Check your bank before selling anything — discontinued pre-2012 items can be worth a fortune
  3. Run the combat refresher: EoC plus Necromancy changed everything about how fights work

Worth playing in 2026?

Yes — for the right player

RuneScape in 2026 scores 72/100 on the overall lens — updates keep coming, and reviews aggregate to 78/100. Its crafting and economy depth is about as good as the genre offers. Budget for the grind — it's high.

Worth it if

  • Skillers
  • Quest lovers
  • Solo progression players

Skip it if

  • you want your time respected — grind is high
  • years of MTX baggage linger (Treasure Hunter was removed in 2026)
  • split combat identity (EoC vs legacy)
  • smaller community than OSRS
