Return guide

Returning to World of Warcraft?

Coming back is a different decision than starting fresh — you want to know what you missed, whether your progress survived, and if the game deserves your comeback. Pick roughly when you left; we'll fill in the rest.

When did you drop off?

What you missed since the Lich King era

Cataclysm – Pandaria (2010–2014)

  • · Warlords added garrisons (and taught Blizzard a lesson about them)
  • · Legion added artifact weapons, world quests, and Mythic+ dungeons — now the game's competitive backbone
  • · Transmog became a full collection system

Warlords – Legion (2014–2018)

  • · Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands came and went — borrowed-power systems (azerite, covenants) were tried and abandoned
  • · Levels were squished: 120 became 60
  • · War Mode made world PvP opt-in everywhere

BfA – Shadowlands (2018–2022)

  • · Dragonflight rebuilt talents into full trees and made professions matter again
  • · Dragonriding-style flight (now 'skyriding') works in every zone
  • · The War Within (2024) started the Worldsoul Saga and added Delves — endgame for one to five players
  • · Warbands made gold, banks, reputations, and collections account-wide

Dragonflight – The War Within (2022–now)

  • · You're nearly current: The War Within's patch cycle is rolling, and the Midnight expansion — with player housing — is next
  • · Delves and follower dungeons keep solo/small-group endgame viable
  • · Warband-wide progression keeps alts cheap

13 major changes across 4 eras since you left World of Warcraft.

Did your progress survive?

Your characters are exactly where you left them — Blizzard never deletes. Old gear is a museum piece, but gold holds value, collections and mounts are now warband-wide, and heirlooms still smooth leveling.

Catching up

  • Leveling is fast now: roughly a weekend from 1 to the modern bracket via Chromie Time zone scaling
  • Delves and world content shower catch-up gear at every patch
  • The latest expansion's intro quest chains hand you a current gear baseline

Your first week back

  1. Log your old main in first — the warband screen alone is worth the nostalgia hit
  2. Do the current expansion intro, unlock skyriding, run a few Delves
  3. Decide retail vs Classic — your subscription covers both

Worth playing in 2026?

Yes — easy to recommend

World of Warcraft in 2026 scores 86/100 on the overall lens — updates land constantly, and reviews aggregate to 85/100.

Worth it if

  • Raiders
  • Mythic+ dungeon runners
  • Players who want the genre's most polished themepark

Skip it if

  • subscription plus expansion cost
  • endgame meta can feel mandatory
  • story delivery weaker than rivals

Composed from this page's data — score, update cadence, monetization — not from a reviewer's mood. Same inputs as the tier list.

What it costs to start

Subscription required
  • · Ongoing subscription needed to play
  • · Subscription (~$15/mo) includes all past expansions
  • · The newest expansion is a separate purchase
  • · Free to try up to level 20, no time limit
