Return guide

Returning to World of Warcraft Classic?

Coming back is a different decision than starting fresh — you want to know what you missed, whether your progress survived, and if the game deserves your comeback. Pick roughly when you left; we'll fill in the rest.

When did you drop off?

What you missed since the vanilla relaunch

TBC – Wrath Classic (2021–2023)

  • · The progression servers rolled on past the era you knew — check which expansion your realm sits in before you resubscribe
  • · Fresh anniversary realms (late 2024) became the standard way to start over at level 1 with a full population
  • · Hardcore and Season of Discovery grew into their own communities with their own server lists

2023–now

  • · You're nearly current — find which ruleset your characters live on (Era, Hardcore, seasonal, or the progression line) and everything else follows

4 major changes across 2 eras since you left World of Warcraft Classic.

Did your progress survive?

Characters persist on whichever ruleset they were made on — but the rulesets diverged: a 2019 character may sit on a permanent Classic Era realm while the progression servers moved several expansions ahead. Nothing is deleted, and one subscription covers every version of WoW, retail included.

Catching up

  • One sub unlocks everything — log in and check the realm list before buying anything
  • Fresh anniversary realms are the cleanest restart: everyone starts at level 1 together
  • Paid boosts exist on the progression line only — Era, Hardcore, and seasonal realms stay boost-free

Your first week back

  1. Find your characters first: the realm list tells you whether you're on Era, Hardcore, a seasonal realm, or the progression line — they're effectively different games
  2. If you want the 2019 feeling again, the anniversary realms are that; Classic Era is quieter but permanent
  3. Classic is a guild game before it's anything else — recruit or be recruited before committing hours

Worth playing in 2026?
