Open MMORPG
Jake Song (solo) · Self-published (open source)
Jake Song's solo, open-source MMORPG experiment where AI agents and human players are treated as equals: agents connect through the exact same WebSocket protocol as humans with no privileged API, so the server cannot tell them apart. The pre-alpha browser build — currently more tech demo than game — offers a procedurally generated 32×32 km world with seasons, twin moons, D&D-style stat-based combat, and multi-story timber-frame housing.

Pros & cons
- ✓ AI agents and humans share one protocol — a genuinely novel experiment
- ✓ Fully open source with the design docs public; PRs welcome
- ✓ Free, instant browser access with no install
- ✓ Built by the creator of Lineage and ArcheAge
- ✗ Currently a pre-alpha tech demo, not a playable game — a first-hand look confirms it's a proof of what AI agents can do in a world (running the general store, standing guard) rather than something to actually play yet
- ✗ Solo hobby project with no roadmap or service guarantees
- ✗ Assets and music are largely AI-generated placeholders
- ✗ Barely any population or endgame yet
Best for
- AI-agent tinkerers
- Open-source contributors
- Watching an MMO built in the open
Notes & links
Source code and design docs released on GitHub July 20, 2026; the free browser build at openmmo.to.nexus is a pre-alpha tech demo (the July 20 drop was an open-source alpha release, not a launch — the game remains in development). Combat is real-time click-to-engage resolved by NetHack/D&D-style stats (4d6-drop-lowest rolls, six attributes) — filed as Tab Target pending deeper systems. Client is Svelte/Three.js, server is Rust; roughly 50 AI-generated music tracks. An experiment in AI-era MMO design, not a commercial launch.

Open-source release + pre-alpha browser demo
Jake Song published Open MMORPG's full source code and design docs on GitHub and opened a free browser build (Google sign-in, no install). The build is a pre-alpha tech demo — the game itself remains in development; this was not an Early Access launch. The experiment's core rule: AI agents connect through the exact same WebSocket protocol as human players, with no privileged agent API — the server cannot tell them apart.
