The most influential MMORPG developer Korea has produced. Song co-founded Nexon and co-created The Kingdom of the Winds, one of the earliest graphical MMOs anywhere, then built Lineage at NCSOFT — the game that made the MMORPG a national industry in Korea. In 2003 he founded XLGAMES and spent a decade on ArcheAge, the sandbox whose trade runs, naval battles, and player housing carried his open-world philosophy forward. He left XLGAMES in March 2025, then resurfaced in July 2026 with Open MMORPG — a solo-built, open-source experiment where AI agents play alongside humans as equals.
Built the Korean MMORPG three times over — The Kingdom of the Winds, Lineage, and ArcheAge — and with them an entire national games industry.— MMOlist Hall of Fame citation
