Return of Reckoning

Return of Reckoning team (community volunteers) · Return of Reckoning Ltd — unlicensed fan project

Warhammer Online resurrected by volunteers and run free for over a decade — the realm-vs-realm MMO EA shut down in 2013, now with more content than it ever shipped with.

Worth playing in 2026?

Not enough data for a verdict

We don't have enough sourced review data to give Return of Reckoning an honest verdict, and we'd rather say that than guess. The gameplay profile and community links below still tell you plenty.

Worth it if

  • Realm-vs-realm PvP players
  • Warhammer Fantasy fans
  • Anyone who wants large-scale sieges without a subscription

Skip it if

  • you want your time respected — grind is high
  • you mostly play solo
  • unofficial and unlicensed — no agreement with Games Workshop or EA exists, and nothing protects your characters
  • a 2008 game showing its age: dated animations, Windows-only, no controller support, addons assumed

Composed from this page's data — score, update cadence, monetization — not from a reviewer's mood. Same inputs as the tier list.

Sourced, dated observations — never an estimate. Different sources measure different things and are never combined.

No verified public player count is available. MMOlist does not estimate MMO populations — an absence of public numbers is not evidence that a game is inactive.

Pros & cons

  • Faction-war RvR with public quests, keep sieges and 24v24 capital-city assaults — a design nobody has shipped since
  • Genuinely free: no subscription, no shop, and the team refuses donations on the record
  • Still actively developed twelve years on — monthly patches, a public test server, and content Mythic never shipped
  • Unofficial and unlicensed — no agreement with Games Workshop or EA exists, and nothing protects your characters
  • A 2008 game showing its age: dated animations, Windows-only, no controller support, addons assumed
  • One server and one prime time — outside peak hours the campaign stalls, and faction balance skews
  • Careers are rebalanced an archetype at a time, so the class you main can change between patches

Best for

  • Realm-vs-realm PvP players
  • Warhammer Fantasy fans
  • Anyone who wants large-scale sieges without a subscription

Notes & links

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning closed on December 18, 2013; Return of Reckoning opened public registration on June 11, 2014 and has now been running longer than the official game was. It is not a museum piece: volunteers restored the two capital cities Mythic cut before launch (Karaz-a-Karak and Karak Eight Peaks, added 2021), remade Land of the Dead, built new dungeons with an in-house terrain editor, and run a multi-year career-rebalance programme. All 24 careers are playable — the same 24 the official game ended up with, since the Hammerer was replaced by the Slayer and never shipped anywhere. Note that Warhammer Online never had player housing and RoR has not added it, and crafting produces consumables and talismans rather than gear. Legal position: the project incorporated as Return of Reckoning Ltd in the UK in 2024 and its terms explicitly disclaim ownership of the underlying IP. It accepts no donations or payments of any kind — a policy its head game master restated in April 2025 — and no cease-and-desist has ever been publicly reported, though no statement of tolerance from Games Workshop or EA has ever been published either.

Frequently asked questions

Is Return of Reckoning free to play?

Yes — free to start. Free to download and play — no purchase required. Completely free — no subscription, no cash shop, and the project refuses donations outright. No retail copy needed: the installer downloads the full game client.

How many people play Return of Reckoning? Is it dead?

Return of Reckoning's official servers are online, but no verified total player count is publicly available. MMOlist shows sourced activity observations — such as Steam concurrent players where a source exists — in the Population activity section rather than estimating a total. An absence of public numbers is not evidence that a game is dead.

Is Return of Reckoning pay-to-win?

No — its monetization is widely considered clean, with little to no pay-to-win pressure.

What platforms is Return of Reckoning on?

Return of Reckoning is available on PC.
