SWGEmu and SWG Legends teams (community) · Community-run — no commercial licence
Star Wars Galaxies never really died — community servers kept the sandbox running, and SWG Legends has now been online longer than the official game ever was.
Worth playing in 2026?
Not enough data for a verdictWe don't have enough sourced review data to give SWGEmu / SWG Legends an honest verdict, and we'd rather say that than guess. The gameplay profile and community links below still tell you plenty.
Worth it if
- ✓ Sandbox crafters and city builders
- ✓ Star Wars roleplayers
- ✓ Players who miss pre-WoW MMO design
Skip it if
- ✗ unlicensed fan servers — no rights holder has granted permission, and nothing protects your characters
- ✗ sWGEmu itself is winding down: 1.0 declared in 2025, with the Finalizer server set to sunset eventually
- ✗ a 2003 engine with 2003 ergonomics and no controller support
- ✗ the playerbase is split across a dozen shards with no trustworthy way to compare them

Sourced, dated observations — never an estimate. Different sources measure different things and are never combined.
No verified public player count is available. MMOlist does not estimate MMO populations — an absence of public numbers is not evidence that a game is inactive.

Notes & links
Two distinct projects. SWG Legends (NGE era, nine iconic professions, levels to 90, full Jump to Lightspeed space) is the actively developed one, shipping a 64-bit server rewrite, a Restuss PvP overhaul and a housing-tools pass during 2026 — the ratings here describe it. SWGEmu is the older pre-CU emulator; it declared its code complete at 1.0 in April 2025 and published a wind-down plan (archive the project, stop taking donations, sunset the Finalizer server roughly a year after successor servers launch), so pre-CU players are better served by SWG New Foundations, which added Jump to Lightspeed in August 2026. Pre-CU shards are markedly harsher than the numbers above: the hologrind, buff upkeep and resource cycles push grind toward 5 and catch-up toward 2, and SWGEmu requires you to legally own an original retail copy of the game. Legal position: both projects are unlicensed and non-commercial, funded by voluntary donations. No cease-and-desist or DMCA action against either has been publicly documented, but no rights holder has ever issued a statement of tolerance either — the widely repeated claim that SWGEmu 'never received a C&D' traces back to a rival server's marketing page, not to any project or press statement.
