Co-creator of EverQuest, the game that took the MMORPG 3D and mainstream in 1999 and set the template — classes, raids, group interdependence — that the next decade of the genre iterated on. He pursued that vision again with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and finally with Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, whose crowdfunded development he led until his death in November 2019. Pantheon reached early access in 2024, dedicated to him.
EverQuest made the 3D MMORPG real, and its social DNA — the group, the guild, the raid — became the genre's. He chased that magic his whole career.— MMOlist Hall of Fame citation
