Return guide
Returning to EverQuest?
Coming back is a different decision than starting fresh — you want to know what you missed, whether your progress survived, and if the game deserves your comeback. Pick roughly when you left; we'll fill in the rest.
When did you drop off?
What you missed since the classic era
The subscription years (2004–2012)
- · Membership went optional in 2012; prestige gear and full AA counts still want All Access
- · SOE became Daybreak (2015), and since 2020 EverQuest lives under Darkpaw Games — still shipping an expansion every December
- · Heroic characters boost straight past the leveling decades you missed
The F2P and TLP boom (2012–2020)
- · The Overseer system (2020) added offline progression — your characters advance between sessions
- · The client moved to 64-bit servers (2022); old zones, sturdier plumbing
- · Progression servers now launch in multiple rulesets — Time-Locked Expansion servers unlock content on a faster clock than the classic TLP cadence
2020–now
- · You're nearly current — Shattering of Ro, the 32nd expansion, lands in December 2026
- · A new Time-Locked Expansion server (Lethar) opens August 26, 2026 — a genuine level-1 restart if you want one
8 major changes across 3 eras since you left EverQuest.
Did your progress survive?
Characters are never deleted — decades-old characters still load on their original (or merged) servers, gear and all. Free accounts play live servers with restrictions (prestige items lock, AA caps apply) until you resub; progression servers require All Access.
Catching up
- ✓ A heroic character boost skips you straight to modern content — the first one is often discounted or free during promotions
- ✓ Mercenaries plus a boosted character make 'molo' (solo with merc) the standard way to relearn the game
- ✓ Or ignore catch-up entirely: the Lethar fresh server on August 26, 2026 puts everyone at level 1 together
Your first week back
- Decide live vs progression first — returning to your old max-level character and starting fresh on a TLE server are different games
- Log in before you buy anything: your characters, bank, and shared bank are intact and will tell you what you actually need
- EverQuest without a guild is a museum tour; check the recruiting shelf below or your server's forums before rolling solo
Worth playing in 2026?
Yes — for the right playerEverQuest in 2026 scores 78/100 on the overall lens — updates keep coming, and reviews aggregate to 79/100. It's built around guilds — bring people or find them here. Budget for the grind — it's very high.
Worth it if
- ✓ Grouping purists
- ✓ TLP server nostalgia cycles
- ✓ Players who want danger back
Skip it if
- ✗ you want your time respected — grind is very high
- ✗ you can only spare a few casual hours a week
- ✗ you mostly play solo
- ✗ punishing by modern standards
