The best old-school mmorpgs in 2026
Old-school here means design philosophy, not just age: worlds that trust you to find your own way, progression that takes real time, communities that formed because the game made you need other people. Some entries are original games still running (Ultima Online, EverQuest); some are deliberate revivals (Old School RuneScape, City of Heroes: Homecoming); a few are new games built old on purpose (Project: Gorgon).
What the ranking shows is that this isn't a nostalgia ghetto — the top entries hold review scores most modern releases can't touch, because the players still there are there by choice, decades of content deep. The honest caveat is baked into the design: old-school games are slower, grindier, and less forgiving than anything built this decade. That's not a bug you tolerate; it's the product. If you want the feeling with training wheels, start with OSRS on mobile.
